Who We Are

Our Story

On a bright Saturday afternoon in the summer of 2015, a group of young men got together in the apartment of one of them, to organize what they called at the time “GYCA”, currently known as GIYC.  This group of young men consists of Gambian Canadian-born and young immigrants from The Gambia. At the time, their concerns were about the absence of Islamic and cultural principles amongst young people’s upbringings.  At GIYC, we seek to be a community where all Gambian Muslims and non-Muslims can come together on a common platform where we celebrate our diverse religions and cultural differences. We do not shy away from the fact that we are proud Muslims and yet African Canadians. GIYC proudly welcomes and serves people of all religions, races, cultures, and gender identities.

GIYC is a community-based youth-driven non-profit organization established in 2015 with the commitment to addressing the Gambian Canadian Youths' integration, education, health, employment, social services, culture, and religious development needs of Gambian Canadians and other immigrants in Canada, through sports, peer mentorship, Islamic and cultural activities, and other services.

GIYC members are peaceful law-abiding residents of Canada, and we have resolved to write and enact a constitution to achieve the aims and objectives set out in our constitution
